Where is Jim now?

Alaska State Ferry

After feverish last-minute preparations, I'm away. My home at the moment is the solarium of the M/V Columbia, the ferry taking me from Bellingham to Juneau. I've made my home in a deck chair for the duration of the journey. The solarium has a roof and heaters and is pretty cozy. (Much cozier than the tents people have pitched on the wind-swept deck aft of me.)

I've met some amazing folks on the way north. One is Dan Kiely, who has paddled solo in Southeast Alaska for a total of three years over the last decade. He pulled up next to me with his kayak while I was waiting to load mine onto the ferry. When I start to feel like the trip I'm planning is crazy, I talk with him and am reassured by his much more extended adventures of the last few years.
